Spike "flying"

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge
. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

A Dog's Purpose

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine
a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The
dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little
boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and
they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of
cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything
for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia*
procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they
thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to
observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane
might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my
throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane
seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was
going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped
peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's
transition without any difficulty or confusion. We
sat together for a while after Belker's death,
wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives
are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been
listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of
his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more
comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn
how to live a good life - - like loving everybody
all the time and being nice, right?' The
six-year old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how
to do that, so they don't have to stay as long. '

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

*When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

*Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy-ride.

*Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in
your face to be pure ecstasy.

*Take naps.

*Stretch before rising.

*Run, romp, and play daily.

*Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

*Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

*On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

*On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a
shady tree.

*When you're happy, dance around and wag your
entire body.

*Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

*Be loyal.

*Never pretend to be something you're not.

*If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

*When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit
close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

Dog spelled backwards is.. God

A Connecticut Senator wants to have all schools start on the same day, after Labor Day weekend.  Senator Gaffey says children should be spending the last days of August on vacation with their families, instead of going back for a few days and then having the long weekend off. Connecticut’s Department of Education requires 180 days of school, but allows each town or city to decide what’s best for their schools.

Too good to play?
Wednesday 08-27-2008 11:22am ET
There's a 9 year old kid from New Haven who is "too good" to pitch for his baseball team!  His name is Jericho Scott and some parents say his fastball is basically too fast, at about 40 mph.  Some kids from other teams are afraid they're going to be hit, but he's never hit anyone with any of his pitches.  Still, the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that he couldn't pitch any more.  Officials for the league, which has 8 teams and about 100 players, said they will disband the team, putting the players on other teams.  An attorney is meeting with the boys' parents to talk about legal options.

I was really surprised when I first heard this story about the 9-year-

old not being able to pitch because he's too good. Where do they

think our professional players come from? And to disband the entire

team. They are not just penalizing him and his coach but all his

teammates as well. I think people need to be more realistic and

realize that not everyone has the same abilities but as long as

everyone on the team is treated equally and he has never had a

history of hitting or hurting anyone, let him play. Would the league

officials rather see him hanging out on a street corner?- Debbie

To add onto Debbie’s comment of “where do they think our professional players come from?”, banning that kid from playing ball “because he’s too good” also sends the messages to a) not bother making an effort and b) that being proficient at something isn’t worth it. My 8 year old son plays coach-pitch ball, and there are several players on other teams that he’s mentioned to me, in the context that he would like to be as good a player as they are. Playing with others who are above average gives everyone else something to work towards. It’s the same as when you work in an office with someone whose ideas and work are a notch above yours – it inspires you to work a little harder and consequently get better at what you do.

Our schools have already dumbed down their curriculums to meet the lowest common denominator. Someone got the idea that the self-esteem of kids who can’t succeed or keep up will be irreparably harmed, so rather than raise the bar and encourage slower kids to try a little harder or make them repeat material until they pass, they changed the program to be achievable by anyone. And as a result, we now have high school graduates with falsely inflated senses of self-importance who can’t read, can’t write and can’t do math. Our technical and medical jobs are being taken by people from India and China – where educational failure and lack of success are unacceptable. Don’t do the same thing with kid’s sports programs. I say, “Let the kid play! Everyone else can try to keep up with him!” It’ll be a good thing for everyone involved.-

Carol writes:  maybe the other players should go to the batting cages for a little practice.

Words can't describe..

The horror I felt when I read this story, from the news section of our website:

80 dogs were shot and killed by two Pennsylvania kennel owners and they did it legally.

State officials say the two men, Elmer and Ammon Zimmerman, ran two separate kennels. And when state dog wardens ordered veterinary exams on dozens of their animals, they killed nearly every dog they had.

At least 70 small breed dogs were found on a compost pile on Elmer Zimmerman's property. He received a poor inspection report July 24th.

Ammon Zimmerman told a reporter his decision to destroy his dogs was quote "none of your business."

In Pennsylvania, it's legal for dog owners to put the pet down by shooting it.

The dog-law bureau's special deputy secretary Jessie Smith says "it's horrible, but it's legal."

Shame on the state of Pennsylvania to allow this!  I'm sure these "kennels" were two of those "puppy mills" that we always hear about.  Please be careful when you buy a puppy. Educate yourself on where your new best friend is coming from, and remember, you can always adopt.  There are millions of animals that need homes.  Both of my Shibas and my cat were adopted.  They are perfect in every way, and I love them dearly. To think they may have come from one of those God awful puppy mills breaks my heart.  I will make it up to them, believe me!  I'm sick of hearing stories like the one above, and I hope someday people will stop being so cruel.  Sorry for ranting and raving, but I just couldn't believe my eyes when I read that story.  -Wendy

I was raised on a farm, and that was the way you put an animal down, when they were sick or badly injuried.  But I didn't know you could "just shoot that many for no reason but to get rid of them???

Terrible.  An animal lover would never do that!
Char

Does Pennsylvania allow us to dispose of the men in the same way????!  They should live in a 5X5 area, fed maybe twice a day, and cleaned up after once a week -- see how they like it! I also always adopt my pets and the are as valuable to me as any pedigree would ever be. -Bonnie

Wendy  - I just wanted to throw up when I read this story.  My Sable had hot tar put on her butt and was turned loose in Dutch Point housing project at 4 wks old because she was deemed "too gentle to fight".  The tar was to mark her as non agressive.  You had told me about getting Barbie before you announced it on the air.  Isn't is amazing what some "people" can do to someone you & I now cherish so much ?  Puppy mills should all be raided , remove the animals , and burn them to the ground.  There is no jail sentence long enough.  Becki

Hi Wendy, Just read the article on your page about the kennel owners shooting the dogs.  That is terrible and heartless.  I adopted a dog from the Little Guild of St. Francis last August 31...she is the best dog any one could ever want.  No one can believe that she wasn't raised by us and that she has only been with us a short time.  I get sick when I hear about the puppy mills and I wish that they would shut them all down.  I agree with you...adopt a dog....we are thinking about adopting another one for company for the one that we have right now.  - Iris

I think that's so disgusting. I know what I'd like to do to those guys.
And they should lose their kennel licenses. Shame on Pennsylvania for
letting them do that. They need to change that law.
Linda

But unfortunately, it's very possible..

These were two of the "nicer" pictures I found from a Google Images search of puppy mills, some were so horrible I felt I couldn't post them on my page.

With all of the cruel things that people do to dogs, this next story just amazes me..

(From CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside his dog and her six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died.

"The dog is a hero to us."
